A retired Baltimore police officer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually abusing children in daycare of his ex-wife. The abuse happened when Weems worked as a daycare driver owned and operated by then-wife Shanteari Young. One of the victims, who was 10 years old at the time, told her family that “Mr. James” showed her pornography. Court testimony shows that something obvious was later found on the girl's tablet. Weems admits watching porn while shipping children, but denies exposing it to them. After the guilty sentence, they said they will consider additional charges after the sentence. Young, he was convicted after learning of the abuse, for testifying against him during the trial. She had previously been sentenced to four years in prison. While the jury was not informed of the shooting, Young recalled that when she learned of the allegations, she was heartbreaking – with Wems' calm manners that constituted her emotions. “It's his turn now.” In March, the family of one of the victims filed a civil lawsuit against Weems and Young. The lawsuit alleges negligence and false imprisonment, claiming that day care fails to protect children from people with known porn addiction. Jonathan Schochor, the family's attorney, said the young victims continued to suffer from nightmares and emotional distress. “These are lifelong injuries,” Shawhall said. “It remains to be seen whether she can face everything that happens in her life emotionally.” Wems was still detained after the sentencing. He and Young are both named in ongoing civil cases.
